Activating Your Shamanic Roots with Shaman Durek

The episode you have been waiting for. I sat down the third-generation Shaman of the 21st century, Shaman Durek to interview him on how we can live our most embodied lives. A spiritual guide and gifted healer, Shaman Durek acts as a mediator or ‘bridge’ between the spiritual and physical planes, applies ancient spiritual wisdom, coupled with decades of devoted study and practice, to help bring success, happiness and healing into people's lives.

Celebrity Shaman explains Why Judgement is a 'Spirit Killer'

Shaman Durek is an author, women’s empowerment leader, activist, renowned inspirational speaker and third-generation shaman with a focus on helping others flourish in the context of authentic happiness. We recently spoke with Shaman Durek and gained some valuable insight into how the ancient spiritual wisdom of shamanism can be relevant in our hectic modern age and how taking things too seriously is one of the greatest traps of all.

A spiritual guide and gifted healer

Shaman Durek is a third-generation shaman. He has devoted decades to study and practice in becoming a thought leader and spiritual enthusiast for people all over the world. He spoke with us on the training and work it takes to be a Shaman and the spiritual advice he’d share with new clients to approve their lives.

Why not have a personal shaman in the 21st century when almost everyone has a nutritionist or a personal sports instructor? We met with Durek the shaman who wants to make the planet a better place.

Shamans, which is the word for “wise man”, are concerned with observing and expounding of the nature, animals and humans. Their purpose is to help to bring out the best in someone. When you make an interview with Durek Verrett, you always have several questions in your mind to ask and learn from him. Especially if you are interested about world courses and self-improvement, a shaman might be the person who can enlighten you.

That's So Retrograde

Once again, Shaman Durek graces the TSR universe, dropping a slew of 'Shaman Bombs’ and evoking the spirits of clarity and guidance. Obsessed with the insight he brings to the show, Elizabeth and Stephanie, welcome the shift in perspective and invite TSR’s listeners to open their hearts and minds to this timely conversation. Later on, Roses and Thorns evokes the spirit of giveaways, good TV and valued life lessons. Check out the interview below!

All of the distractions in the news and our social atmosphere have created a sense of fear and put us in a place of defense. We live with the constant awareness that something bad can happen. We perpetuate this fear because we have become afraid of one another and of ourselves. This is unfortunate for us and for our species as a whole. This is not why we were born. It is not our purpose on earth to live in fear of each other.

In order for us to be fully present, we have to have a clear sense of who we are and direct that energy from a place of love, not fear.

Jordan kicks off the show with an appearance by two VERY special guests: her mom and dad!! They chat about Jordan’s spiritual journey a little bit before we get to the real interview with Shaman Durek.

Mind Body Green

After complications from an illness left Durek "clinically dead," he was inspired to take up the mantle of shamanistic healing, and now Durek travels the world, working with A-list celebs the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, European royalty, and anyone who believes that emotional and spiritual healing hold the key to healing the body. The third-generation shaman and star of mbg's first original documentary, Healers, made his second trip to #mbgrevitalize this year to share his legendary hugs and a disquisition on fear and faith with us.

In this fascinating interview, I talk in-depth with my good friend Durek, about his work, and what it really means to be a shaman in today’s world. As everything spiritual becomes increasingly trendy, and everyone and their mum seems to be joining Ayahausca ceremonies, I wanted to gain insights from someone who is evidently truly gifted and has a profound and powerful connection to the spirit world.

W Magazine

When Karen Elson and Jack White got married in a canoe floating down the Amazon River and a shaman was their officiant, the ceremony seemed appropriately eccentric for the rock ‘n’ roll couple. As if the far-flung setting wasn’t otherworldly enough, the sanctification of their marriage by a medicine man only made the scene even more surreal.

Speak Up Magazine

Shaman Durek, from Northern California, comes from a long line of spiritual practitioners. He began seeing and communication with spirits when he was two and began his spiritual and shamanic studies when he was 12.

It’s the middle of the day and I’m sitting in a hotel suite in Piccadilly holding hands with a total stranger. The palm of my hand is tingling, and when he tells me to breathe deeply, the feeling intensifies and tadpoles of warmth run up my arm. Next he tells me to laugh. The corner of my mouth twitches as I try to resist. ‘Laugh,’ he says; this time louder and more forcefully. I can’t help it — I burst into uncontrollable giggles.

A “SPIRITUAL shaman” who has worked with stars including Gwyneth Paltrow is turning his attention to Londoners, who he says “drown their emotions out with alcohol and cigarettes”.

Shaman Durek, the man who came back from the dead in order to assist Gwyneth Paltrow is traveling the world with five sets of pants and a play station for one reason only: to give you a hug. Special interview before his arrival in Israel.

Goop Magazine

By definition, a shaman is “a priest or priestess who uses magic for the purpose of curing the sick, divining the hidden, and controlling events”—powerful, indeed, particularly when you encounter a shaman who believes that part of his mandate is to teach us all how to fish for ourselves. Shaman Durek, who was born in Northern California to an African-Haitian father and an East Indian/Norwegian mother, began his shamanic studies at the age of 12—as the spiritual heir to his great-grandmother Mamal. But as he explains below, being a shaman isn’t just about bloodlines: It’s a calling, which requires extreme and prolonged rites of passage—in Shaman Durek’s case, he had to actually die, and then physically put himself back together.

"This is probably my first interview with many spirits, not a single one at the same time, and I’m doing it consciously. Although it sounds a bit weird, since it’s a shaman on the phone, things are different."

Heart and Soul Magazine

“You don’t spend Your whole life working on Yourself. that is not what it’s about. You spend Your life loving Yourself.” ~Shaman Durek, a Los Angeles-based spiritual guide and teacher.

Cumhuriyet Daily

“Most of the Shamans in different parts of the world do not want to deal with people in the western world, as they find people rather spiritually closed and confrontational.“

Shalom Magazine

The only reason, why I was able to write this interview, which you are about to read, is because I met Shaman Durek Verrett. I do not believe in coincidences. I think that everything comes to us for a –certain- reason. It has happened to me that way. I full-heartedly wish that you find something for yourself throughout these lines.

At the tender age of 5, Shaman Durek already knew his path in life: He was to be a shaman. His great grandmother, who was a medicine woman and a powerful member of her tribe in Africa, spoke of Durek long before he was born and appointed him as her successor.

Seen Heard Known Magazine

"I’m a professional worrier. Sometimes I forget to breathe. I don’t believe in any kind of religion. I think religion is bullshit. The bible is like a huge family saga. Then suddenly, something happens that is so unbelievably unexplainable. The butterfly that perches on my mother in the golden hour of the day, that reminds her of her brother. The dream the other night that put everything in perspective. And sometimes a really weird day turns into a life changing experience."

Metro Source Magazine

Music Icon Jim Morrison said that people are afraid- of themselves, of their own reality, especially of their own feelings.  Shaman Durek Verrett sees the fear. ” People put up a mask in order to feel safe, but I see past it,” he says. ” I don’t let people make excuses.  I”m not going to hold you’re hand either.  I want you to stand on your own feet.”

L.A., long known for its high-vibing spiritual history (think Krishnamurti, Crowley, Blavatsky and Yogananda), has always been, and continues to be, a mecca for practitioners of mystical healing and metaphysical practices. And recently there’s been a fresh influx of shamans who’ve made their way West to mediate between the realms of the spirit and the physical, all in the name of healing humanity.
